The F40 was released in 1987 to commemorate the 40th anniversary of Ferrari's founding. Hot Wheels chose the F40 Competizione, a special edition of the car, as its subject, and it is said that only 13 units were delivered to Ferrari's "special customers." It features fixed headlights similar to the earlier race car, the F40LM, a front cowl with large cooling vents, a low-slung front lip spoiler, and a wing with an angle adjustment mechanism.
