The 170-series Crown, introduced in 1999, was notable for its split into two series: the luxury Royal and the performance-oriented Athlete. It also featured a sedan body with framed windows for the first time in a while, and the wagon version, which had been in continuous production since the 130-series introduced in 1987, was finally redesigned as the Estate. The 170-series, also the last Crown passenger car to feature an inline six-cylinder engine, has recently attracted attention as a Crown that retained the flavor of the 20th century, preceding the major changes that followed with the 180-series.
